mt st helens art. Deep inside the crater of Mt St Helens. Climbed up to the top of the volcano for this interior shot. Good thing the volcano did not awaken. The volcano is located in the southwestern area of Washington state approximately 50 miles from Portland, Oregon. The dome was blown off during its volcanic eruption on May 18th, 1980. I was living in Vancouver, Washington at the time and the amount of ash turned daytime into night. This National park was decimated by that eruption. We drove up near the volcano before the roads were eventually closed and noticed a car that was melted. The doors were melted down into the soil. Now it's a scenic location but that day and the days that followed; it looked as though an atomic bomb was dropped there. It is still an active volcano so be aware when visiting the crater and summit. (c) David Millenheft All Rights Reserved.
